Review of Sleuth (2007) by Keith T — 13 May 2008
I approached this film of the Anthony Shaffer play with more than a little trepidation, knowing that the run time had been cut by about an hour from the excellent 1972 film version. However, it does all still hang together rather well. Indeed, the faster pace of Kenneth Branagh's direction makes in many ways for a more gripping tale. The updating of the screenplay by Harold Pinter also removes several plot aspects from the original that have not worn quite so well.
Michael Caine's performance is superb and he is clearly enjoying the chance of playing the "Lawrence Olivier" role of Andrew Wyke. Jude Law is also excellent as Milo Tyndal (played by Caine in the 72 film), although perhaps now he has played Michael Caine in both Alfie & Sleuth he should be very careful about a third time!
