Review of Sleuth (2007) by Phil C — 25 May 2008
Can't say I thought much of this one. The big problem lies in that Pinter writes the screenplay as he would for the stage; and Branagh assumes he can pull his usual tricks and it'll end up being cinematic. Not true; Branagh's previous work has been blessed with excellent and thoroughly unstagy adaptations.
The first act is rather good; the constant shift of power between Caine and Law is a lot of fun. But it all goes to pot in an incredibly unlikely 'twist' during act 2 and a horrible third which feels like somebody trying to write Pinter.
A glossy, pretty faliure. But a faliure none the less.
