Review of Sleuth (2007) by Katie S — 24 Aug 2008
This film is an hour shorter than the original. What was cut? All the character development. They just never explain why these two guys are playing with each other and by the 3rd act, they are doing whatever the fuck. The first two acts are ripped from the original play/movie. Those are okay...maybe...although it's a complete retread of what came before (minus the cool stuff about the original). Sure, the original is quirky and weird, but this new one is just batshit insane. NOT TO MENTION, everything that I loved about the original was cut in this version. What was the point. The first 5 minutes of the 07 one had me glued in, expecting a new, refreshing take on the classic. Instead, this disappointing jumblefuck didn't accomplish anything and nothing can be salvaged from the loserly, undeveloped characters at the end of the film. Stick with the original.
It should be noted, Michael Caine kicks ass as always and it is awesome, seriously awesome that he took the Olivier role for this. Law, on the other hand...this was the first time he's let me down (although, seriously, make a good movie, for the love.).
