Review of Sleuth (2007) by Daniel W — 13 Apr 2009
Mystery writer Michael Caine invites Jude Law to his austere mansion for a little chat. You see, Jude has been sleeping with his wife, and naturally that makes the clever old dog just a little bit miffed. Someone will get his comeuppance.
This remake of the Olivier/Caine movie of the 70's should be an engaging battle of wits, but unfortunately it's largely toothless. The story is so undercut by Branagh's "Hey, look at me!" direction, several of the shifts in this power play are muted to the point of barely being noticeable.
Little fault for this missed opportunity lies with Caine (He's pretty good), but Law is often so over-the-top it's as if he were auditioning for the role of The Riddler in the next Batman movie.
