Review of Sleuth (2007) by Johnny M — 03 Feb 2009
Premises: 1.) Loved the original. 2.) Love Michael Caine. Love that he is one of the hardest working actors out there and am usually not disappointed (Children of Men...) 3.) The "Alfie" thing.
Again, I preferred the original, but in doing a vertical tasting, was intrigued by the eerie resemblance of Jude and a young Michael Caine. eerie... So now we have another situation where Jude is re-doing a MC role - and I was torn.
The stark icey blue setting where the clutter and gadgetry of the original version is replaced with more modern gadgetry - I get it. This version, however, did not seem as intimate and textured. On one level, it is more intimate as there is a hint of Jude being available to either party, but it still fell a little short.
It seemed to end too blandly, and, of course, the arrival of the wife was straight out of "Clockwork Orange.".
