Review of Sleuth (2007) by Alex V — 08 Apr 2010
4.0/10 --.
Remember, "Sleuth (1972)," the amazingly clever adaptation of a play of the same name. Kinda one of the greatest films ever made? Well, guess what? It's remake time! That means everything gets the "New Age" treatment. Everything is sleek and chrome and metallic and technological. Even the directing style goes to overwhelmingly artsy places. Despite it's newfound sense of cold charmlessness, new "Sleuth" had all the potential to be a respectable re-imagining. But then it decides to sacrifice the more sinister aspects of the original, and even the key theme of playing "games," for the sake of reoccurring homosexual undertones, which eventually develop into sustained homosexual overtones. Then before you can say, "What the hell is happening to my beloved tale of mystery?" the movie ends on a painfully blunt note and you're left sitting there feeling numb with disappointment. Seriously. What the crap. If it wasn't for expert (if lacking nuance) performances from the cast, I would write this thing off completely.
