Review of Sleepy Hollow (1999) by Baurushan J — 12 Mar 2012
This film is a true example to show how really good horror movies were made in the 1990s even though it takes place about two hundred years ago the time it was released. The story is about Ichabod Crane played by Johnny Depp who because of his outrageous behaviour is sent to the test of investigating the murders of people having their heads cut off at a haunted city named Sleepy Hollow by his boss played by Christopher Lee.
There he finds out about the mystery of the Headless Horseman played by Christopher Walken who once was a brutal mercenary who lost his head during a battle and now rose as the Headless Horseman and the only way he can get his head back is find his skull and stop him from chopping off anymore heads especially under the control of Lady Van Tassel played by Miranda Richardson who is the wife of the leader of the city who knows the Headless Horseman since she was a little girl And has been serving him since he rose from the dead.
An epic battle with Crane finally thwarting Lady Van Tassel and giving the horseman's head back, he rides off into hell with his slave in his hands. After Crane's job is finally over, leaving the murders he takes the remaining survivors including the daughter of Baltus Van Tassel played by Michael Gambon named Katrina played by Christina Ricci and an orphaned boy known as Young Masbath played by Marc Pickering.
As the credits start to roll, a song starts to play that leads us into a new century...EPIC! What made this film so great is it's list of great actors, I mean come on, Johnny Depp in a horror movie? I know that's not likely after Wes Craven's A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) but come on you have Christina Ricci on the side there as well and I honestly believe that this is her best movie ever.
And finally we get to Christopher Fucking Walken! good god what perfect casting is that! I don't think anyone can top him as that role because he's not playing the Headless Horseman, he is the Headless Horseman and Ray Park who you may remember as Darth Maul from Star Wars-Episode I: The Phantom Menace plays his stunt double-double Epic! The rest of the cast includes Christopher Lee, Casper Van Dien, Jeffrey Jones, Richard Griffiths, Michael Gough, Ian McDiarmid, Michael Gambon and Miranda Richardson.
good good what a bunch of classics for a Tim Burton movie this is just too good and just spiraling out of control. Set pieces were are perfectly realistic. This film takes place at the end of 1799 and this is how 1799 should look.
There is no denying in the direction that is was perfect. Tim Burton's direction is always great and this is a classic example. Sleepy Hollow gets a true 10/10.
