Review of Sleepy Hollow (1999) by Andre M — 16 Dec 2012
I'd watched this some time ago but couldn't for the life of me remember much about it, so I assumed this was because it was just an average film. Clearly it's just because I have a bad memory because this was actually very good.
It's a very typical Tim Burton / Johnny Depp creation full of fantasy with the odd moment of creepiness, mainly culminated through Depp's oddball character, similar to Willy Wonka or Edward Scissorhands.
He this time plays a young inventive detective who is assigned to investigate the murders at Sleepy Hollow where a headless horseman is beheading local residents one by one. As the story unfolds, and the bodies pile up, we enjoy a good level of action, some mild but slightly comical horror, and a good whodunit style storyline as we discover who is the brains behind this homicidal maniac.
It's an all star cast so is performed very well, has excellent special effects which aren't overdone, and has a perfect blend of narrative and action. I'd probably liken it to the new Sherlock Holmes mysteries with Robert Downey Jnr.
One things for sure, I think I will be remembering this one this time, and I anticipate my good memories of it will eventually make me want to watch it again further down the line - very entertaining!
