Review of Sleepy Hollow (1999) by Johnny T — 16 Mar 2011
A spooky gothic horror tale with first-rate production design. Sleepy Hollow is visually sumptuous and playfully creepy. An entertainingly eccentric horror tale that envelopes the audience in a dreamy and bloody nightmare. This is a very bloody fantasy (reds do eke their way into the black-and-blues), but it's hard to think of another film with as many severed heads whose overall tone is so sweet. Visually sumptuous and playfully creepy. It is thrilling to look at, and that's more than one can say for the majority of pictures out there. The entire film is an eyeful, an odd triumph of old-fashioned filmmaking.
VERDICT: "Full Price" - Second highest rating in the system (Positive to Mixed reaction). This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theater to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent.
