Review of Sleepless Night (2013) by Dany L — 25 Aug 2013
This movie sucked. Like too many movies these days, there was gratuitous violence and swearing. I mean, really people, is it necessary? The main character had no moral compass and at one point was very violent towards a woman and there were sexual overtones along with the violence- sick.
It was horrible to watch and I have a pretty high tolerance for that stuff, believe me! Oh, but he apologizes to her later, so it's ok, right? (Classic abuser behavior, and on Netflix as a shiny example for not-so-mature audiences watching) So during the entire movie this guy is either chasing after or being chased by the bad guys who took his son.
Pretty good premise. A lot of action. That's why I gave it 2 stars. (Changed it to 1 actually) The guy did a great job of acting like he was desperately trying to save his son under a ticking clock.
The plot was a little convoluted at times, it finally came together in the end, but still wasn't completely satisfying to me because my stomach was sick from the violence. Another thing this guy does is start to dance and kiss this woman he meets in a bathroom.
He saves her, ironically, from this fellow woman-beater earlier in the movie. So they start making out on the dance floor, and he uses her as a ruse. Later on, when she expects more from him, like maybe for him to ask for her number or to take her home, he acts like a complete ass and gives her the meanest looks and basically tells her to % off!! Like she was some some stray animal.
In other words, the main character isn't that likable and if the audience likes him they must either (a) receive Maxim magazine, (b) isn't a feminist. When the protagonist in a movie begins the movie killing and stealing, then in the middle violently threatens a woman and in the end beats up a man with violence only a psychopath could, we are heading to some gray areas between good and evil.
what is happening to us, as a human race? We're supposed to identify with the protagonist, and the protagonist's morals are not only fuzzy, but straight up evil? We're not talking Bad Lieutenant, Marv from Sin City or Dexter to name a few anti-hero protagonists.
... The entire movie left me with a bad taste in my mouth!! In fact I'm going to give it one star, I just changed mind. The poor son got all mixed up in this and not nearly enough camera time or empathy was focused on him, I know it's just a movie but jeez.
:D.
