Review of Sleepless in Seattle (1993) by Deb S — 28 Mar 2010
Sleepless in Seattle is a lovely romantic comedy that tells the story of Annie (Meg Ryan) who is engaged to a very dull Bill Pullman. En route to her parents' house on Christmas Eve, where she will introduce Pullman as her fiancé, she overhears a young boy (Jonah) on the radio who has phoned the talk-show psychologist asking for help.
He is worried about his dad Sam (Tom Hanks), a widower who can't seem to get over his grief of losing his wife to cancer. More than that, this kid recognizes that his father, is desperately lonely and so he's looking for a new wife for his father and a new mother for himself.
Annie is touched by Sam's moving story of love and loss and after much deliberation, she feels that hearing about Sam on the radio was fate giving her a sign that she is not meant to marry the most boring, pathetic soul on the planet.
She decides to meet Sam to find out if he is her destiny. Jonah who is convinced that Annie is the best option, arranges a meeting on top of the Empire State Building and books a flight for his dad without telling him.
Only time will tell if Sam and Annie are made for each other.
