Laura Burney (Julia Roberts) is a married woman living in a beautiful home by the beach on Cape Cod. Her husband Martin (Patrick Bergin) is a handsome and wealthy investment counselor who is also very possessive, abusive, and controlling.
To escape Martin, Lauraâ"whom Martin believed to be a non-swimmerâ"plans and fakes her own death at sea in a storm while the couple are boating.
