Review of Sleeping with Other People (2015) by John M — 15 Mar 2016
The standard R-rated rom-com. So this is about two friends that have stayed close friends since college (Jason Sudeikis, Alison Brie). They have terrible luck in romantic relationships, but are hesitant to enter into one between the two of them because of the risk of ruining the friendship, and this is probably starting to sound as familiar as can be.
The biggest criticism that I have about this is that this is simply treading the same exact water that the classic When Harry Met Sally already mastered. I can't blame them; that movie is excellent, and I'm fine with others trying to emulate it.
I do feel like they had to have added a little more to it to make it its own thing, and in that regard, I don't feel that Sleeping with Other People succeeded in what it set out to do. Now I do enjoy the body of work of both of these actors.
I think Sudeikis can be great when utilized correctly, like in the first Horrible Bosses, and I've had a TV crush on Brie ever since Community was airing on NBC. They do share a decent chemistry, and they both have the talent to pull this off, even though it does feel like Sudeikis is simply playing himself, and Brie isn't playing anything too far from Annie Edison.
It's sweet and raunchy, and while it doesn't reach the realm of something like The 40-Year-Old Virgin when comparing it to other similar modern comedies, it is in the same ballpark tonally, so you know you're going to get a lot of your standard sex jokes that you would expect from an R-rated romantic comedy.
I honestly don't have all that much to say about this. It serves its purpose, and it is satisfactory, just not entirely memorable. There have been so many stories out there told before about couples that belong together that are stuck in the friend zone, and it has been done better than it is here.
To their credit, this type of movie fails for me far more often than it doesn't, and I think the reason why this is as good as it is has to be the commitment and the chemistry between Sudeikis and Brie.
They are what makes this movie as good as it is, despite the fact that they are starring in a movie that fails to bring anything new to the table.
