Review of Sleeping Beauty (2011) by Stephen Z — 17 Apr 2012
I had high hopes for this film and to say it fell short would be an understatement. An obvious retelling of the German film "House of the Sleeping Beauties" from the perspective of the beauty. unfortunately this adaptation lacked in so many areas it would be difficult to list them all.
There was a serious lack of plot development, the story was lost in the directors misguided attempt at artful editing and poor camera work. The underlying message was buried so deeply as to be completely lost. The writing was shallow at best and felt as though the majority of the script was most likely devoted to stage direction.
The one saving grace and the reason for my three stars was Emily Brownings performance. She clearly did the best she could with what she was provided and pulled it off quite nicely. It really is a shame that everything else about this film was so terribly produced. This could have been a great stand out roll for her in so many ways.
