Review of Sleeping Beauty (2011) by Matthew Samuel M — 30 Nov 2013
This is a purely voyeuristic movie that is somehow completely unsexy despite its content. You basically just follow this girl around while she works at her various odd jobs (and I do mean odd) and somehow still can't make rent which makes absolutely no sense.
The only thing that held my attention was morbid fascination at what odd job she'd take, some suspense of what would happen to her while she "slept" next to these men old enough to be her grandfather and pure curiosity- like "ok, now she's closing down a diner? Where did that job come from??" She seemed to play house in a with an alcoholic friend she had for a sense of normalcy and comfort in her life but she never truly seeks out anything normal, only things that are self destructive drawing negative attention- which of course alludes to deeper troubles but it's just so vague.
It doesn't really have a plot- it's a character study about her however it never really explains what made her choose her lifestyle and if she finally got scared enough to quit. It just stops and rolls credits.
If you need resolution in a movie, then don't watch this- you will be left frustrated. I gave it an extra star and a half simply because despite it's faults I still watched it to the end because it was so bizarre.
This is an art house movie, and I'm hit or miss with that genre.
