Review of Sleeping Beauty (1959) by Katie W — 01 Jan 2010
THE GOOD.
- Maleficient. She makes a great villain, an even better dragon, and her appearance in the stairwell scene seems downright Shakespearian.
- Aurora at least has a great singing voice. I think the singer could've made it far in American Idol.
THE BAD.
- Zero creativity: "Hey, you're beautiful!" + "Hey, you're tall and handsome!" = true love's kiss?
- The princess has no personality, the prince has no personality, their love has no personality. Their chemistry makes Pocahontas and John Smith seem like Bogart and Bergman.
- I've NEVER seen a Disney hero cheat this much to win! Will the Prince really stay faithful after happily ever after??
- Maleficient's lack of intentions: Why does she hate the king so much? Why is it so important that Aurora dies? And if it's that important, why didn't she just kill the baby right there rather than hex it?
THE INTERESTING.
How did Aurora dream up this tall and handsome man when she's never seen a man in her life? Isn't that impossible given how dreams are dependent on memory? Meh, fairytales. XD.
