Review of Sleeping Beauty (1959) by Jareth S — 13 Nov 2010
I have some issues with this film's dippy screenplay, but I have to admit that this may be the most visually beautiful of all the Disney animated films, thanks in no small part to Eyvind Earle's distinctive art style. The Blu-ray looks simply gorgeous. Maleficent is quite possibly the best of all the Disney villains.
I'm still annoyed by how blatantly stupid the fairies are right at the deadline for Princess Aurora to return home. Are these incompetent buffoons who you really want to raise your beloved daughter for nearly 16 years? It also might be a better disguise if the 3 fairies didn't wear their trademark colors whilst they were supposed to be incognito. Here's an idea: lie to 'Briar Rose' about her birthday, that way Maleficent's spies won't see her celebrating on that day and get suspicious. I've never seen so many avoidable problems caused because two bickering females couldn't agree on a dress color. Maybe many of the problems are from an old written source of the fairytale, but it seems like a bit of clever writing could put the plot in motion without so much idiocy. Putting an entire kingdom of people to sleep so they won't be sad about the princess being in a coma? Yeah, that's surely the moral way to handle the problem...
