Review of Sleeping Beauty (1959) by Timmy S — 03 Jan 2012
Among Disney's "Princess" series, I consider this strongly as being the best. Although like the original Tchaikovsky version, this was big-budgeted and lavishly-produced (and in comparison was short in duration), I still couldn't resist that childhood nostalgia I felt when I re-watched it as a teen.
The story of Aurora was wonderfully placed, and that evocative (yet unoriginal) score comprising that sweet song "Once Upon a Dream" was too unforgettable. However, what I really admired was its original story-lines - among them the inclusion of three fairies with original names and traits, and of course Maleficient and Diablo.
Aurora's tale was perhaps a tad too short, as I said before, and I won't disagree that it took some of its charm away in the end (as she and Prince Philip danced in King Stefan's Hall, I actually wanted it to continue further on).
But Sleeping Beauty, like the best of Disney's franchise, awoke heavy nostalgia within me, and as part and parcel of Disney's sweetness, I think this maybe one of his best.
