Review of Sleeping Beauty (1959) by Zack P — 26 Dec 2012

I never watched this when I was younger, so I don't have the bias that many others have about it. It is a good movie, but it just doesn't compare with the present standards. The storyline is very simple, and it doesn't show all that much emotion.

Surprisingly enough, I found that the most emotion came from the three fairies, and not from Aurora's parents or even Aurora and her suppose-to-be true love. The only statement about love that this movie makes is how random/sudden it can be.

Even though it was supposed to be "love at first sight," because there was never any relationship development, it also seemed to support a message of love comes directly from outer beauty. The action was good, but the entire movie was way too fast paced.

The climax was over before you knew it. If the movie were made longer, in which most of the additions included more meetings between Aurora and her love (to establish an actual bond by personalities), and some lengthening between the prince's escape and the dragon fight scene (maybe the prince explores the town to see everyone asleep to create a more epic final fight and further show that he is the last hope), I feel like the movie would be a great deal better.

The movie is still strongly recommended, but just don't expect something very complex or deep.
