Review of Sleeping Beauty (1959) by Matt W — 19 Apr 2014
A film that oozes Disney magic, whilst also being one of the darkest Disney Princess films.
Sure, the story may feel a little outdated, and it feels very thin. It is still a gorgeous film to watch, and look at, with some charming songs.
Maleficent is a classic villain- but nowadays feels completely two-dimensional, being evil because she was not invited to a party.
The fairies are the characters who have most development, and there is actually an emotional pay-off, when the 'beauty' penultimately goes to... 'Spoilers'... Sleep. It is quite dark scene where they break down.
The film is much more serious than other Disney films, but it is still a beautifully animated film, full of Disney magic that some recent efforts have lacked.
