Review of Sleepers (1996) by Sounak M — 06 Jan 2009
I know I stand all alone with this review and that's fine, I can take it: I Fucking hate this film. I Loathe it. It's up there with Vanilla Sky, Batman Forever and Forrest Gump.
Why?
It's just sooo damn easy to wring sentiment from a set up like this that it feels made purely to win awards. It does have similarites to Stand By Me and attempts to take the same basic premise of childhood innocence and strong friendships to a different level. Chuck in a cast that couldn't fail if they remade Power Rangers together and la-di-da you have a "powerful, mesmerising and compelling drama". No, you have an overbaked potato trying to be a haute cuisine trifle.
And as for it being a true story, evidence is lacking, sceptics have never been answered and it's more likely that the author spent a lot of time reading early Stephen King.
