Review of Sleepers (1996) by Daniel A — 05 Feb 2012
Certainly not a bad film, but when you consider the talent involved (DeNiro, Hoffman, Pitt etc.) Sleepers begins to look like a bit of a wasted opportunity. Also considering its heavyweight subject matter (juvenile-delinquency, murder, child sexual abuse etc.
) the events that unfold pull their punches somewhere because they land soft blows that lack impact. Some of this can be put down to Barry Levinson's screenplay, which features one of the weakest courtroom scenarios I've ever seen, despite Dustin Hoffman being in the attorney's chair, and chooses to focus on the spoils of vengeance rather than the ramifications of the characters' ordeal.
On the upside Kevin Bacon outacts his superior co-stars playing a hideous, child abusing prison guard, and the film, on the whole, is certainly watchable.
