Review of Sleeper (2012) by Tia R — 24 Jul 2010
The fact that I like about Woody Allen is that you could immediately tell that it's his work, no matter he's the actor, director, writer or all of the above. I always enjoyed the bold vintage styled opening credits, his duo with young pretty talented actress and his cynical yet humourous dialogues.
Sleeper is Allen's vision of a futuristic big brother government, maybe this is his interpretation of George Orwell's 1984. A government that makes people indulge in their most primitive needs: sex, shelter, material. This is already happening sorta kinda happening today, but the government is not doing it, it's the media. The paparazzi, the tabloids and the silly TV shows. People are growing less interested in the role of the government and this disinterest is gonna to create the kind of government visioned in Allen's movie or Orwell's fiction. Seriously.
Allen's made himself clear at the end of the movie: I don't believe in science, god or any form of government. I only believe in two things: sex and death. Well, he is a step ahead of me in believing things, at least I still believe in some form of government.
