Review of Sleeper (2012) by Reinier M — 18 Aug 2011
Woody Allen's zany parody of every dystopian government ever depicted in science fiction literature is a tickling mash-up of satire, slapstick, silent movie tropes, and numerous comedy styles, marking his first big step into finding his cinematic voice.
While there are a few clever commentaries about our society as seen from a skewed futuristic perspective, this sci-fi cares less about subversive philosophy and more about bizarre hilarity. Allen is hysterically funny, as always, and scores big laughs alongside his costar and 70s muse Diane Keaton, a fine comedienne in her own right.
