For about five minutes there I thought Allen had thrown himself into a movie where he could not constantly use his "intelligent New Yorker" humor, but boy was I wrong. Thankfully he actually succeeds with this humor for about 80% of the jokes in the film.

Sometimes the jokes seem incredibly forced (most notably the scene where Allen explains some old photos to a clueless historian) but with a mix of slapstick and satire he has less chances of tripping.

Allen doesn't use satire too frequently, but its addition in this film was quite welcome. It's not as well thought out as some of his later offerings, but this is about as funny as his humor style can get.
