Review of Sleeper (1973) by Steve R — 16 May 2008
A bit of a mixed bag. On the plus side there is much of Woody Allen's great dialogue, some wacky 1970s futuristic-looking sets (albeit on a tight budget) and some great slapstick routines homaging Chaplin, particularly Modern Times.
On the down side, the intellectual humour he's famous for is more likely to get a wry smile than a good laugh, and his preachy left-wing views are heavy-handedly plastered all over the storyline. Also, despite the film's short length it does feel like it's really dragging for the last 20 minutes or so.
In short, if you're a Woody Allen fan you'll find enough here to entertain, but if you're not, this won't convert you. Watch Manhattan instead.
