Review of Sleepaway Camp (1983) by Hunter D — 19 Dec 2007
This movie definately wasn't a run-of-the-mill slasher movie, which is sort of a shame. "Sleepaway Camp" is really trying to be a layered drama with a body count, the trouble is that most of the people in this movie can't act and the dialogue is very poorly written.
The stalk/kill sequences in the film are almost suspenseless and feel terribly unrealistic. The cinematography is boring and flat, and there is hardly any depth of field to speak of. However, there is something about this movie that charmed the Hell out of me, enough to overlook it's many glaring flaws.
For one, the lead actress, Felissa Rose, plays an interesting character that I actually cared about. Plus, despite the movie being mostly devoid of scares, the film ultimately delivers the goods in the end, with a twist ending that's pretty terrifying and sick.
It's an abrupt ending, however it ends the movie on such a high note that you can't help but come down from watching it with a satisfied smile on your face. It's ultimately one of the more memorable movies in the glut of slasher flicks that were spawned in the eighties.
