Review of Sleepaway Camp (1983) by Michael K — 31 Dec 2007
Cult horror that followed in the wake of Friday The 13th basement bin style horror, except it was a cut above. Although the horror moments were pretty standard there were a couple of nice, unusual endings that brought a bit of a laugh, strangely though it was the non-horror moments that lifted the film above similar horrors of the time.
Unlike several recent horror films where you feel as if you're just sat in your rollercoaster seat being pulled or pushed to the next execution scene, this had some character exploration and gave you an uneasy but intriguing feeling throughout.
Even if this isn't one of the best horrors I've seen it provides more interest than things like Final Destination do and serves as a reminder that Eli Roth's comment that "What is the horror?" is infinitely more scary than "How can we kill these kids?".
