Review of Sleepaway Camp (1983) by Jason Á — 14 Jun 2008
I watched this movie solely for its camp value (no pun intended). I see why it's a popular campy movie, but it was a bit painful to get through. The acting was unabashedly bad, the plot was ridiculously padded (what the HELL was that baseball scene all about??), the dialogue was atrocious (no amount of cursing could save this dialogue), and the ending was SO homophobic.
.. I mean wow. *SPOILER* Let's just assume the homophobic paradigm that being dressed and treated like a girl could drive an otherwise sane male to homicidal mania. Accepting that, I don't think it would make him so crazy that he would kill THAT many people, and eventually end up cradling a decapitated head while hissing.
And (this comment is to movies in general) what is up with the "cradling the decapitated head" cliche? I've seen this in too many movie, and it hasn't worked in any of them. I got some enjoyment out of this movie, but very, very little.
