Review of Sleepaway Camp (1983) by James S — 17 Oct 2008
Okay I'm a sucker for these good/bad old horror movies. Everything from the overly pronounced dialogue to the cop's fake moustache is just fun. It's never really scary except for the shocker of an ending that did manage to unnerve me a bit, but there are no surprises when it comes to who dies.
The dialogue is sometimes terrible, but not painfully so. The acting is done best by the kids with Rose, Teirsten, and the others doing a fine job. The counslers could have been better (I'm talking to to Katherine Kamhi), but most of them get by because of their likability.
The deaths strain believability (the whole bee thing I mean come on...), but they do get creative. And they get better towards the end. The camera angles get odd, because it will some time go off center leaving who we're focused on over on the far side of the frame.
That starts to get old real fast. But it was still worth staying up to watch and I'll probably look into the terrible sequels that followed.
