Review of Sleepaway Camp (1983) by Jason O — 08 Dec 2009
***Spoiler Warning***.
One of the greatest endings ever. Never has a penis made for such a spectacular climax! (Wow... That sentence is wrong on sooo many levels.) The first 70 minutes play out like every other slasher flick that preceded it. Nothing new, nothing fresh, a wanna-be "Friday The 13th". But the last 15 minutes completely negate the rest of the movie's obvious shortcomings. Kudos to Hiltzik and the rest of the filmmakers for going balls out (literally) with one of the most shocking and satisfying (*insert inappropriate gay joke here*) plot twists that one could imagine.
I wonder what the writing sessions were like for this film.
"Ooh! I got it! The killer turns out to be a preteen girl!".
"Great! But... I'll see your preteen girl serial killer and raise you by showing said preteen killer naked on a beach, only it's not a girl. It's actually a boy who was thought to be dead and has assumed the identity of a preteen girl..... Also, his wiener is in full view.".
"Brilliant! That's box office gold!".
At any rate, this is a movie that everyone should see. You may love it, you may hate it, but you WILL remember it... Forever... Even if you don't want to. In fact you may want to keep a phone book handy so that when it ends you can quickly look up the nearest therapist.
