Review of SLC Punk (1998) by Christine B — 28 Feb 2008
A movie that delivers a message. A message that Anarchy and Punk rock is really a different type of conformity. This theme is often overlooked and people generally see this masterpiece as a "way we should live" sorta film.
On top of this you have an extremely powerful performance by Mathew Lillard who makes it obvious that he is destined for big things. It is also artistically overlooked as if you really focus you will see Archetypes that make it so great and give you the feelings it strives for.
It's flow has a jagged anarchist feel as a matter of fact. It breaks plenty of rules and does so well. Past that, what draws you in for the fun, finishes you off cold. This is done to make us know the feelings that our character Steveo is having.
He is growing up and changing. He doesn't like it. Most people develop quicker, but not as well. He finally reaches his center only after "what got him into punk music" dies. This movie is a working of artistic directing, great cinematography, delicious dialogue, and a truly fantastic story.
It is in a way a small time epic. The journey of Steveo from child to man. It works so well, and to say the director didn't achieve what set out to achieve would be a lie.
