Review of SLC Punk (1998) by Kyle G — 21 May 2012
A quirky and maddening collage of nihilistic twentysomething shenanigans. The comedy inherent in the lives of Stevo and Heroin Bob often does work, but it's frequently insincere and somehow regrettable.
Their multi-dimensional tale, though it's meant to be abstract and a little queasy, still seems more unfocused and loose than it should be, like ruffling through a bag of ideas. The resulting random and silly glimpses, including several unfinished (though thoughtful) meditations on ideology, do eventually cohere within the last few minutes into a decently complex story. But that story ends too abruptly, on a curtly conservative note that seems to rob it of any truth.
