Review of Slaughterhouse-Five (1972) by Paul K — 24 Feb 2008
I read Slaughterhouse Five about a year and a half ago. It was my first Vonnegut book and although it was not love-at-first-sight, it wasn't long until I wanted to read all of his most celebrated works.
The story stands in my mind as one of the greatest I've read and the film does a pretty good job of depicting the events properly. However, as I was watching, it occurred to me that his stories are more likely better when they remain in their original text format.
Sometimes the imagination does a better job of bringing words to life than a director and camera. For me, that was the case with Slaughterhouse Five; I missed the way my own brain envisioned everything.
Perhaps this is a common complaint with adaptations of beloved stories, but I know there have been wonderful exceptions like The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It's worth a watch, anyway.
