This one of those great raunchy comedies from the 70's ("Bad News Bears,""Smile," etc.). There's not much depth here and any attempt at a message is somewhat muddled. It tries to condemn and balance out some of its bad behavior, when in actuality it's reveling in them.

Ultimately, I think it's trying to tell us that violence is bad and audiences shouldn't thirst for it. But it sure makes that violence look fun. There's also a lot of gay humor, but the film makes a point to tell us that homosexuality is okay (which for its time was probably fairly progressive).

But much like Paul Newman's character (and sly performance), "Slap Shot" is so appealing and charming, you just don't care. Besides, it's freakin' hysterical. It's full of great lines and outrageous characters - love them Hanson brothers!
