Review of Slap Shot (1977) by Q.l. — 22 Jun 2008
Hadn't seen this for years, and after spotting a friends review, pointed out to my wife what a beloved film it was. She hadn't seen it all and so I was keen to share, and lo and behold, it's still a classic.
Not just a great sports movie, but a great commenatary on the sport on that time, and funny as all get out. Any and all sports comedies that came after bow down and pay tribute, panned on release this movie earned it's love with movie fans down through the years, and personally it's hard to remember a week going by without a Hansons quote, or line getting dropped by friends.
Raw, violent, funny and massively politically incorrect even at the time it's especially impressive to remember this movie that so many guys have embraced as a real "mans" movie, was in fact written by a lady.
That's not to say the film is without comment, Newman dances his way through his team like a master ringleader, all the while seemingly oblivious to the fact he's losing or has in fact lost, his own wife. Ontkean is great, and the teams are rounded out by the sort of memorable single shot characters that make casting in other films look lazy by comparison.
I'm probaly going to buy a Chiefs Jersey right after I've finshed this.
