Review of Slacker (1990) by Jimmy M — 08 Dec 2008
Disappointing. The weakest member of the "American Independent" cinema I've seen (Metropolitan, Sex, Lies..., Do the Right Thing, ...) At the very start, when the camera's pulling away from the accident you get a frisson of anticipation - I wondered if it was going to be as cinematic as Scorsese at his peak.
Unfotrunately not. The same trick is used over and over again. Some segments are interesting, others not, but in the end it feels like they ran out of ideas and so just pull the cinematic equivalent of "and then they all work up and it was a dream".
Shame.
