Review of Slacker (1990) by Brendan P — 27 Dec 2008
I think any reasonable fan of this film would concede that Slacker's impact on independent film and it's cultural relevance is far greater than what the movie actually accomplishes. Unlike later Linklater directed work the scattered scenes and elongated dialogue are not strongly bound by the underlying themes, but are hollow and disconnected and lack any literal insight into any subjects they touch upon.
The acting ranges from interesting to absolutely dreadful, although the physical casting of all the characters is generally quite good. I really expected a lot more from Slacker, and was disappointed that it didn't have more to offer.
But it's relevance in cinema can certainly not be overstated, and I definitely learned a lot from watching it.
