Review of Slacker (1990) by Jason F — 28 Mar 2009
You know Mr.Linklater, I'm a big fan of your movies such as "A Scanner Darkly" and I think "Dazed and Confused" is one of the greatest films of all time. However, I'm not sure how you got noticed with this film and I'm shocked that this launched your career.
This film is unique in the sense that it never stays with a character for morethan a few minutes, so therefore we don't have a main character in the film. The entire film is basically about people in their twenties(for the most part) talking to other people about every day things.
Only thing is, these things arn't really interesting so that pretty much dooms the film right away. See people talking about everyday things isn't bad, like" Clerks" for example, except that the conversations were a lot more interesting, and we had main characters we learned about.
As for the absence of main characters, we also don't really care or connect with anyone and are taken out of the film, waiting for something good to happen and then just hoping it ends. The only good thing about this film is the unique style of not following a specific person, but looking at a community of Anarchists, slackers, thinkers, paranoid subjects, and more.
If only they talked about anything interesting. Infact, funny enough, the only interesting conversation in he movie was at the very beginning where the director Richard Linklater makes his cameo when talking to the cab driver.
After that, it all goes to shit. All in all, skip this, but go with the rest of his filmography.
