Review of Slacker (1990) by Robert H — 22 May 2010
It'd be far, far too easy to label "Slacker" pretentious. Honestly, that's kind of the point: the entire film is essentially a profile in the eccentric louts populating Austin, Texas, all of whom enjoy disjointed, rambling, pseudo-intellectual conversations when they aren't busy doing nothing by themselves.
Preposterous is a better term to slap on "Slacker." It's preposterous that anyone would want to spend any amount of time with these assholes, preposterous that this kind of solipsism could be charming or even enjoyable, and especially preposterous that characters this flat could even possess the level of "depth" writer/director Richard Linklater invests in them.
