Review of Slacker (1990) by Andrew B — 30 Jul 2012
Do not confuse this with the 2002 Piece o' shit that airs on comedy central once a month. That would be "Slackers".
This was Richard Linklater's debut feature and it's very interesting. Features one of his favorite subjects: Passive people doing a lot of talking. Some of it provoking, some of it asinine and some just absurd. The Camera bounces around Austin in long drawn out takes as men discuss how the smurfs instill communism and prepare people for hare Krishnas, A robber gets lectured by an old anarachist when he breaks into his home, A JFK Conspiracy theorist annoys people in a book store.
The film was made on a low budget and reveals a lot of talent. Apparently this is the film that made Kevin Smith say: "I Can be Filmmaker, Dammit!".
