A very unfocused yet significant effort by a very intelligent film-maker, Slacker seems like an ethnographic study of the youth culture of the early 90's, actually it documents an entire subsection of people who would not do anything more than ponder over the highly philosophical questions surrounding existence.

As a debut, it is a film that is too ambitious for it's own good. Linklater needed a little more experience as a director before he could harness these ideas into a more cohesive and compelling picture.

It's a challenging film, as well as boring film, but still interesting in the sense that it's different.
