Review of Slacker (1990) by Tim O — 07 Nov 2009
It's unfortunate that I saw this for the first time this past week. I had always heard of it from various Kevin Smith interviews where he says that this was one of the main films that inspired him to make Clerks.
It's great because it definitely is a movie from the early 90's, with the amazing grunge clothes, but it also reminded me a lot of my recent experience in college in a college town. This film perfectly captures, with a hint of satire, this scene and in that sense it hasn't been dated.
I remember listening to wordy, trippy, philosophical conversations between college kids. Having to listen to hilarious and insane conspiracy theories and life stories by ambushing bums. Either way this film captured everything I loved and hated about this experience.
There's no plot, it's just sort of a day in the life of this particular culture of people in Austin, Texas. The dialogue is amazing, often very funny, sometimes enlightening. This is definitely a very different, interesting movie that's well worth a watch and is a new favorite of mine.
