Review of Slacker (1990) by John S — 21 Aug 2011
It's marvelous because of what it is: a character study but the character is not a single person, the character being studied is a culture, a generation, an ideology, a mindset, and even, a species.
It's thoroughly engaging on so many levels and you can't help but feel part of this film, and in turn, feel part of our culture as Americans. If you explain this film to anyone in the world, they would tell you it sounds boring, but amazingly, Linklater has crafted an invisible narrative that is captivating and never becomes boring, not even for a second.
In it's minimalism, it is surprisingly complex and with little effort, it is powerfully effective.
