Review of Skyscraper (2018) by Greg C — 13 Jul 2018
"This is stupid" - Will Sawyer. What if the Rock remade Die Hard but wasn't as funny? Dwayne Johnson, who here plays a security specialist named Will Sawyer, is a cottage industry of movies that don't care if you suspend your disbelief.
Surely I thought San Andreas was some sort of cap on that scale, but no. Skyscraper is completely a summer popcorn movie. Neve Campbell as the wife and mother is more than a damsel in distress but probably doesn't have enough to do.
Chin Han as the developer/owner of the tallest building in the world is charismatic enough, but left me wishing Jackie Chan had gotten the role. Rolland Møller as the villain fits the type and has a motive but at the end of the day is nothing special.
Do not come for the unexpected, because this movie could not be more obvious if it tried. The emergency of this towering inferno is so pressing and fast paced that there is almost no time for Johnson to really dial up the charm.
The movie shines in visuals. I want to know how they made it, and I hope they used some full-sized sets instead of all CG. The edges of the CG and practical effects are nearly seamless. Once you turn your mind off, it's an OK ride, not that I would do it again.
(This one gets and extra 0.5 star for Johnson performing as with an prosthetic limb.).
