Review of Skyline (2010) by Rhys C — 03 Jan 2012
To be honest, I think I was expecting much, much worse. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather eat a steaming bag of horse manure than watch this again, but the manner in which this seemed to be branded one of the very worst movies ever was a little harsh. Granted, the story is beyond weak, with characters you care nothing for - you can't even be bothered wishing for a quick death from them such are their interesting features, but with serviceable special effects at least it was watchable (though we did keep checking our watch for the last 30 minutes wondering how much longer there was left).
But really it's main issue is that the story just doesn't warrant a movie being made of it. Hashing together so many alien attack movies ranging from Independence Day to Cloverfield, you hope at least it would maintain some of the excitement or interest of some of those films. But unfortunately, it plays out more like a tv movie with no intrigue and instead focusing on vacuous characters living their lives in a flashy environment. You spend more time looking at the hi-tech features of the apartments than the characters and their beyond stupid decisions, the shoddy acting does little to help either. So while it's not quite as bad as what had been portrayed to me, I suppose that made it even less satisfying; it was instead just a bore.
