Review of Skyline (2010) by Thomas V — 19 Sep 2015

Sometimes there are movies so different, that both critics and audience don't grasp it . Even a critic who liked it, didn't quite get the points or the "mysterious" ending, which - to me - is amazingly beautyfull !

But that's why You'll see people feeling strange about this story and dialogues - the funny thing is that though this movie indeed is visual, You have to add Your imagination like when You read a book .

BUT people have forgotten that extra sense because a "plausible and humanistic" story is all that matters .

Well, sorry, "Donnie Darko", sorry "Jacob's ladder", sorry "Cube", sorry "Dark City" sorry "Matrix" ... oh, wait there's one easy to digest for all !

SO because these Strause-guys are responsible for SFX in Avatar and 2012 You believe they make this movie a DEMO-reel of SFX - that they need to PROVE their skills ?!?

No, I'm sorry to say this, You people are deaf and blind just because they generously spoil You with SFX ..., but believe me, there's much more going on !!!

Some people are just not accepted by the contemporary society, like famous painters they must die or give a shit like Brett Leonard ;-).

People are only beginning now to realise that movies like "the lawnmowerman"(over 20 years ago) were real gems like this : DIFFERENT or STRANGE . "When you're strange" or different, an "ugly duckling", You get mocked - and JM could testify this too !

But I guess that when You're American You see a lot of movies and may get to be too quick on the draw ... I find this movie is sophisticated in subtle ways that escape "worn eyes" and I'm a European who happen to like Polanski, Bergman, Fincher, Kubrick, Boyle, Von Trier, Lang, Lynch, Fellini, Kazan, Tarkovsky, Peckinpah, Jarmusch, Bertolucci, Almodovar, Cronenberg, Soderberg, Scott, Gilliam and many more ...

Everybody - both critics and audience - trips them selves up over a really bad movie (even Roger Ebert - though he tried to stop himself) like : "Burn After Reading" as long as it's made by the Coen Brothers . Well, THAT movie is crap even as parody on comedy and if You open Your mind to think (!) You would wellcome the Strause Brothers "Skyline" which has a surprising and suggestive way to look at large concepts we miss out today like LOVE, PROGRESS, HUMANITY, SPIRITUALITY & CORRUPTION !

Besides that it's bloody entertaining and a well made action horror sci-fi, enjoy it with popcorns and a romantic red wine ...

You could argue that I over-interpret this movie, yes, I might be wrong, but the REAL REASON people hate this movie is that they think humanity loses to the aliens - HA ! ;-).
