Review of Sky High (2005) by Zulf M — 24 Dec 2008
The best way to define this film is to think 'High School Musical, without the singing and with super powers instead, and not rubbish'.
The plot is pretty good, the effects of the individual powers are great, and the acting is very good (in places). As ever Kurt Russell does a fantastic job as Steve Stronghold/The Commander, as does Danielle Panabaker as Layla, Michael Angarano as Steve Stronghold and,my personal favourite, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Gwen/Royal Pain.
Though mainly for teenagers, this is a good film. Some great and funny lines and references, including Spider-Man and Wonder Woman. The best line would have to be Winstead's "I went through puberty twice, for this?!".
It's not all good though. It being a teenage film there's a lot of corney...ness (just look at the Superhero names). A lot of 'friends forever' references, if you understand what I mean. There's also a problem with some acting, which appears off at times. They also appeared to have spent a lot of money in the individual abilities, but not on anything else (I'm talking about the giant robot scene at the start, what the Hell was that?).
Still, if you can ignore the corniness, the small amount of poor acting and effects, it's a pretty decent movie. And Winstead doesn't half look hot in her outfit as villainess Royal Pain.
