Review of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) by Jim S — 24 Feb 2010
Inspired by old serials, "Sky Captain" struggles to maintains altitude. With a story which essentially takes place in a fantastical comic book 1930s universe you would think the filmmakers would try to make it clear quickly what is going on, but sadly this is not the case here.
The all CGI-world is a mix bag. On the one hand, the stylized CGI manages to make some not entirely fantastic effects workable, on the other hand it's clear the director was limited in his ability to use his actor's and hence they often seem entombed within the digital effects.
It does not help that the director resorts to lame little gimmicks like shining lights in actors faces. The acting itself is, with the exception of Gwyneth Paltrow who does rather well despite having to portray a character who comes across as a a complete imbecile, is rather poor.
Jude Law barely seems to act act all as the the "Sky Captain" himself.
