Review of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) by Justin S — 16 Apr 2009
It's noble in that it tries as much as it can to remind us why people loved going to the movie theaters in the first place. Much of the art design, script, and plot direction hearkens back to the earliest sci-fi adventure films.
And most noticeably the visual effects and cinematography are extremely polished in a potentially detaching, but still somehow mystifying manner. Nothing about it feels that "real", and I don't think it was meant to. It is an efficient spectacle designed to be fun more than anything of a blatant overstatement.
